Research

research on interviews:

https://youtu.

this video was very useful and gave good insight on how to make a multicam project in general as the person in the video said keeping the camera's the same/ similar height otherwise it may look of when editing.

research strategy:

Research Strategy is a step-by-step plan of action that gives direction to your thoughts and efforts, enabling you to conduct research systematically and on schedule to produce quality results and detailed reporting.

Research strategy provides the overall direction of the research including the process by which the research is conducted. Case study, experiment, survey, action research, grounded theory and ethnography are examples for such research strategies.

for my research, i plan on doing survey's and looking into cooking shows and other multicam works to get the gist of how they work and are made

There are two different techniques of multi-camera filming, the first utilises more than one camera; recording onto each, then bringing the footage into an non-linear editing software (NLE). After the footage is synced, the editor then cuts between the cameras in post production,

however i may end up using one but having different shots depending if i am unable to find the go-pro's i have at home, if i cant find them i will be using my phone for each of the shots.

Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analysing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to wider populations.

Qualitative research involves collecting and analysing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. Qualitative research is the opposite of quantitative research, which involves collecting and analysing numerical data for statistical analysis.

Anything subjective is subject to interpretation. In grammar land, this word relates to the subject of the sentence. Usually, subjective means influenced by emotions or opinions.

as for my project i would like to make it in the style of a YouTube video i have some knowledge into how it is conducted and they are presented by the chefs.

research into multicamera pieces:

If you shoot the same event/scene with more than one camera and try to edit the multiple cameras' footage together, you are multicam editing. Soap operas, reality TV, concert/theatre videos and weddings often utilize multicam editing.

I looked into multicamera tips on YouTube

https://youtu.be/fn_AnPnTFEs

in this video the tips i found highly useful for a multicamera were the camera setting and ensuring that they all have the same settings like exposure.

i feel i understand more about using multiple camera's and to make them all align with each other in a sequence

Advantages of multi camera:

  • multiple shots are captured in a single take without having to start and stop the camera
  • Every angle is covered giving a variety of shots to choose from
  • It is a lot more efficient for productions also with live productions is quicker and easier to instantly broadcast the program and for films the scene will be done a lot quicker.
  • For live programs cameras will catch a realistic reaction from the interviewee or the audience as the scene would not need to be repeated
  • cameras are already in position
  • Lighting and sound is a lot easier to control as the cameras will remain stationary there for sound and lighting do not need to be adjusted.

Disadvantages of multi camera:

  • Setting up the equipment is a lot more time consuming
  • It cost more money than say a single camera production
  • In terms of location directors have to use studios for sets instead of the actually location they may want to portray so it almost takes away the realism of the production.
  • Again with location sometimes as a viewer you may be able to see camera equipment in shot which sometimes cannot be avoided due to the setup used.
  • editing is a bit different as there are more shots to edit

theories:

Mulvey theory

Laura Mulvey wrote and essay called "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema", written in 1973 and published in 1975 which talks about the representation of women in media. which contributed to film theory and spoke of the "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" which helped bring the term 'male gaze'.

Male Gaze:

the term 'male gaze' is referred to the depiction of women in media that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the heterosexual male viewer.

the female gaze:

The “male gaze” invokes the sexual politics of the gaze and suggests a sexualised way of looking that empowers men and objectifies women. In the male gazewoman is visually positioned as an “object” of heterosexual male desire.

The female gaze is a feminist film theoretical term representing the gaze of the female viewer. In contemporary usage, the female gaze has been used to refer to the perspective a female filmmaker (screenwriter/director/producer) brings to a film that would be different from a male view of the subject.

Queer theory:

https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-queer-theory-definition/

i looked at this website to get a better grasp of what queer theory is

finding the target audiences for cooking shows:

primary research:

survey

asking other peoples opinions on cooking and if they watch them

secondary research:

internet generally the people who tend to be the ones cooking are the demographic for what sort of show they are presenting.

for example sortedfood the YouTube channel, their audiences tend to be young adults and adults in general who are looking to cook more or cooking for the first time

i think that my main audience is either young adults or adults depending on whether i end up making a YouTube style video or a tik tok video as tik tok videos are a lot simpler recipes as it is a very short duration which may be more appealing to young adults. on the other hand a YouTube video may appeal more to a older adult as it is longer in duration and a lot more detailed recipes.

generally tic tok video's are for children, teens and potentially young adults and i think for a cooking related video the audience on tic tok would be young adults since children and young teens may not be as interesting in cooking since they live at home with parents or carers.

MEDIATION The popular conception of mediation refers to the reconciliation of two opposing parties by a third, and this is similar to its meaning in both Marxist theory and media studies.

ANCHORAGE Where the meaning of a media text is fixed or stabilised by a caption, shot type, costume or so on

mediation is the creative choices made by the producer and what they intend to represent through their piece with the editing, mise en scene, camera angles as these can change the way an audience view's the piece

anchorage is a tool that changes the perception of how an audience sees a character, the way a character is portrayed is very important as this can immediately show whether a person in a show is good or bad or can show what profession and personality they have.

in my piece the main focus for me would be the mediation as my choice of editing and visuals as they help to represent that my intended show is a cooking one as the ones i have seen have similar aspects using both editing and camera angles. with anchorage i think it is less prominent in my piece as i don't intend of necessarily showing a character.

The Great British Bake-off:

i plan on researching into this more

analysing a sorted food channel on YouTube

the kind of video's they are vast as they don't strictly do cooking tutorials, they give advice on what sort of food you may want to try by testing them out on camera, they also test out gadgets that are used in the kitchen which may seem strange.

on their channel they also do challenges and reviews of recipes and cooking with a time limit to show the audience the good quality of the food they make even with a time limit.

pn the following website

moodboard:

recipes -  as for the type of food that i think would be best to try and make a savory style food as i may be more a challenge to make one of those sorts of foods rather than a cake or something sweet,

i looked at the website:

https://www.purewow.com/food/easy-dinner-recipes-for-beginners

but i found that the recipes in this website weren't really what i was looking for.

at home me and my mother made a iced bun using a recipe that we found

look at cooking channels

for my cooking show, the character who will be seen in the video is a chef

the design of the chef wont exactly be in the stereotypical chef outfit as the whole theme of this video is to be like a homemade cooking show with a home cook so the outfit isn't necessary.

i was suggested to take a look at James martin who does Saturday morning cooking on TV

target audience:

demographic:

My demographic for my cooking show is about the range between 25years to 50years old as i think that people of this age would be more interested in cooking/ learning how to cook

psychographic:

may have interests in cooking or want to get into cooking/ baking but don't know how. - looking for simpler recipes

behavioural?:

geographical:

i think the location of my target audience would be primarily the UK but could also be anywhere else as i am rather interested in the idea of making a youtube style video which can be viewed anywhere

AIO?: activities interests opinions

DRAFT?

introduction about me

introduction about cooking show

i am making a cooking show which will be primarily in the style of a YouTube video but can also be used on TV the demographics for the intended audience is about the range between 25years to 50years old as i think that people of this age would be more interested in cooking/ learning how to cook simpler recipes than what you see in most cooking tutorials.

the audience for my unit 10 project may have interests in cooking or want to get into cooking/ baking but don't know how. - looking for simpler recipes which can be made easily with a few ingredients

the behavioural statistics for my audience are that perhaps they work a nine to five job and they watch it before making their at home meal. (idk about behavioural honestly)

i think the location of my target audience would be primarily the UK but could also be anywhere else as i am rather interested in the idea of making a YouTube style video which can be viewed anywhere

as for their AIO i am directing it towards the middle class which indicates that they wont have a lot of the expensive equipment as most households don't have them they they may be interested in being able to make the food on tv without the expensive equipment used.

reasons its been difficult to find my audience is because i think is strongly depends on the presenter as

if they cooked a lot of meat and a vegeterian clicked on the video they wouldn't enjoy it due to the food type

another example is that if the presenter talked all bubbly and sounded as if they were talking to a child most adults wouldn't be interested

it also depends if they are entertaining enough for the audience

want to get another hobby in covid19/ lockdown

but for my idea I will be doing something similar but not exact to this cooking group on youtube to that is where I found my key audience

for this profile it is important to my programme as it shows the kind of audience I am trying to make interested in my cooking show

ending – thanks you for taking the time to listen to my presentation

James Martin cooking video

when looking into a james martin show as suggested by my lecturer, i have watched a program where he goes to different places around the world maybe as i only happened to stumble on the video when it was on TV.

https://youtu.be/qsSj8-etAEs

i have decided to watch one of his Saturday morning shows on YouTube and analysed 5 mins of it so get a gist of what it in tales.

the shots are:

medium shot where you can see the ingredients in front of him and the camera follows him

an above shot to see exactly what the ingredients should look like

close up from the side which may make a better angle

he directs his audience in a casual way and describes exactly what his thought process is and gives useful advice.

in this video he is multitasking which can be good for an audience so they can work effectively however if they are less confident in their ability they may have to do each part individually which may take more time.

with his shots he shows what each stage of the process should look like which is very helpful for an audience if they feel it doesn't look right

Inspiration for my piece:

in what i wich to make i am heavily inspired by the youtuber

imamu room

example of video:

https://youtu.be/NOXAj3DOH2E

since her process and approach to her video's are simple and easy to understand

Comments

  1. Analyse James Martin ... saturday morning show. Analyse : i mean what media theory is applied in this show? e.g. mediation used and anchorage. Also what cameras and guests are used and how?
